{"id":19461,"date":"2025-12-02T22:59:01","date_gmt":"2025-12-03T05:59:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/heinleinsociety.org\/?p=19461"},"modified":"2026-01-01T15:42:34","modified_gmt":"2026-01-01T22:42:34","slug":"the-society-considers-open-access-for-the-heinlein-journal-archives","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/heinleinsociety.org\/the-society-considers-open-access-for-the-heinlein-journal-archives\/","title":{"rendered":"The Society considers open access for <i>The Heinlein Journal<\/i> archives"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Open access to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/heinleinsociety.org\/purchase-issues\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Heinlein Journal<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> archives<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is being considered as a way to maximize the reach, impact, and preservation of Heinlein scholarship by making it freely available and easily discoverable to readers, teachers, and researchers worldwide.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/heinleinsociety.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Heinlein Society<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> became stewards of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Heinlein Journal<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> following the death of its founder <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/heinleinsociety.org\/heinlein-journal\/bill-patterson\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bill Patterson<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in 2014.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Journal<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has never had a large readership. The Society\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/heinleinsociety.org\/board-of-advisors\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">board of directors<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is considering a plan to publish old articles on the web and we\u2019d love to hear the opinions of the membership and larger community.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>So far, the contributors we\u2019ve contacted have all agreed. Some comments:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI strongly support making <em>The Heinlein Journal<\/em> freely available,\u201d responded <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/scholar.google.com\/citations?user=EbwiqDkAAAAJ&amp;hl=en\"><b>Bruce P. Dunn, PhD<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, retired professor, author, and contributor of the Heinlein Journal article \u201cClifford C. Wider dissemination and accessibility<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By removing paywalls, the journal\u2019s content becomes available to a global audience, including independent scholars, students, educators in underfunded institutions, and the general public. This broadens the reach of research findings significantly.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>2. Increased research impact and citations<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Studies have shown that open-access articles often receive more citations than those behind paywalls. Open access articles are found more easily via general search engines like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/scholar.google.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Google Scholar<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This increased visibility can lead to greater engagement with the literary figure&#8217;s work, encouraging more robust and diverse scholarship.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOpen access is part of a growing trend in academic publication,\u201d noted Dr. Dunn. \u201cI have done a search using Google Scholar, and it can&#8217;t find my Furnas article. It may not recognize <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Heinlein Journal<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as a scholarly journal\u2026 If the journal were made open access, then articles would be much more visible to search engines.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3><strong>3. Democratization of knowledge and global equity<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Paywalls create a \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Digital_divide\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">digital divide<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u201d limiting access to research for independent scholars, students at less-funded institutions, and researchers in developing countries. Enhanced public engagement and education<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Open access allows K\u201312 educators, general readers, and enthusiasts to engage with scholarly work, enriching education, fostering intellectual curiosity, and bridging the gap between academia and the public.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Heinlein Society\u2019s mission speaks to these goals: \u201cWe will \u2018Pay it Forward\u2019 through support of educational, literary, and charitable endeavors including\u2026the creation and distribution of teaching materials, [and] support of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Heinlein Journal<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d (Bylaws, Article I, Section 2: Mission).<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>5. Support for interdisciplinary research<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Easy access to content allows scholars from other disciplines (e.g., history, sociology, art history) to incorporate literary studies findings into their own work, leading to new insights and innovative, interdisciplinary projects that might otherwise be hindered by access restrictions.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>6. Greater visibility for Heinlein\u2019s works<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A dedicated open-access journal can serve as a central, highly visible hub for all research related to Robert A. Heinlein (as the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Journal<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> always has in print, albeit serving only paid subscribers), raising the Grand Master\u2019s profile and helping ensure his enduring relevance in contemporary scholarship and culture.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI think Heinlein scholarship is lagging behind Bradbury, Clarke, and Vonnegut scholarship,\u201d said <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Victor_Koman\"><b>Victor Koman, PhD<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, three-times Prometheus Award-winning author and contributor of the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Heinlein Journal<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> article \u201cI Thought I could use Imperium as an example of a novel by a <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">real<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> fascist until I discovered it wasn\u2019t a novel\u2026\u201d (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/heinleinsociety.org\/product\/issue-no-19-july-2006-52-pages\/\"><em>THJ<\/em> #19, July 2006<\/a>).<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3><strong>7. Author benefits and copyright retention<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Contributing authors (past and future) would retain the rights to their work through less restrictive licenses (such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/creativecommons.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Creative Commons licenses<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), giving them greater control over how their material is used in teaching or future publications.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>8. Some Life members may have chosen that level in part to gain full access to the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Journal<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> archives, and open access could devalue the premium membership, and perhaps seem to be an unfair change to the terms of their paid membership benefit. The current idea is to release all the archives, while perhaps making new issues available exclusively to Society members for a period of six to 12 months. What do you think?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Permissions are ambiguous<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014&nbsp;While the Society possesses some of Bill\u2019s correspondence, we don\u2019t have it all, and Bill\u2019s arrangements with contributors were somewhat informal. There are no signed license agreements, and his arrangements appear to have been made informally over email, phone calls, or in-person conversations. The argument can be made that the Society acquired licenses to all THJ contributors\u2019 works from Bill\u2019s estate, however there was never any prior agreement about republishing or open access. The Board feels it\u2019s responsible to secure a second, more formal permission. We have started contacting contributors, and while everyone has so far agreed enthusiastically, it will take some time to track everyone down (and some authors have passed away).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Technical challenges<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014 The archives of the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Journal<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will take significant work to turn into online articles with adequate structured metadata, good search and filter abilities, a good reader experience, and custom formatting for things such as footnotes.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Volunteer effort<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014&nbsp;Like all Society activities, the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Journal<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is edited and produced <a href=\"https:\/\/heinleinsociety.org\/editors\/\">by volunteers<\/a>. Adding a new endeavor may require more volunteer assistance. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/heinleinsociety.org\/contact\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can you help?<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ultimately, shifting to an open-access model broadens dissemination of knowledge of the important work of Robert A.
